“Thinking in systems” is a complementary approach to classical problem solving methods, such as using structured logic or reasoning. At its core is the discovery of underlying structural similarities that permeate nature, human thought and our social and physical systems.
The presence of these similarities allows us to apprehend the common features of the systems around us, regardless of their sophistication, scale or complexity. It allows us to simplify that complexity into conceptual models that are easier to understand and communicate. Once we learn to recognize the underlying structure of complexity, we learn that seemingly unrelated domains can offer insights to each other by way of metaphor or analogy. In some cases, even through direct comparison.
Taken together, we discover that the science of complex systems and the application of systems thinking applies just as easily to physical systems as it does to conceptual ones. Perspective Broadening & Diversification

Often, it stems from how our brains process and organize information. This sort of diversity can include gender identity and expression, ADHD, Autism-Spectrum, past issues with substance use and misuse, depression, bipolar, schizophrenia & schizoaffective, and the extraordinary or uncommon life experiences that often shape our lives and relationships.
Rather than viewing neurodiversity as a disadvantage or disability that requires accommodation, we view this sort of diversity as an authentic way to gain information about the world in ways that others cannot. Our experiences offer insights that add value to the community - a hard won sort of wisdom that can only be earned authentically, as a person with non-conforming or neurodivergent lived experience.
At CGSC Systems, what has brought our advisors together is not only our lived experience with neurodivergence and non-conformity. We have all mutually identified and intentionally developed skills in Systems Thinking. This is a form of reasoning that emphasizes problem solving by describing whole systems, their parts, their relationships and reasoning about the cause & effect relationships within those systems. This is enhanced through our multidisciplinary educations and real-world experiences.
